5. Android netbooks on their way, likely by 2010

The first “proof” in the tech blogs that Android is meant for embedded devices, thanks to Daniel Hartmann porting Android on a netbook which we had bought in the local super market before christmas.

4. Mobile ad spending rises as iPhone effect kicks in

As the economy started to tank due to the financial crisis I believe this article was the first one to show how iPhone-related app advertising was starting to take off and how. Thanks to Admob’s Jason Spero for being a sparring partner in this.

3. Carriers begin to believe in data revenue, as Android’s puzzle pieces come together

The early days of mobile data becoming a significant revenue stream for (US) carriers. Early thoughts on what Android’s role will be in this.

2. Android wants to be on any device, not just your phone

To my best knowledge the first tech blog article on how Android is meant for embedded devices.

Article written together with Eric Eldon, with Daniel Hartmann as the main source for insights and with MG Siegler’s constant Apple rants as a main source for motivation.

1. Analysis: MySpace and Facebook challenge mobile-only social networks

My first article in the Valley community and one of the 10 most read articles on VentureBeat that year.

The article was significant as it described how so-called “off deck traffic” or the concept of “open mobile” was taking off. For context why “open mobile” is significant please read Accel VC Rich Wong’s piece From CTIA: The rise of open mobile (and congratulations Android team). Accel invested mobile advertising company Admob which got acquired by Google may be considered the first “winner” of the open mobile era. There were previous contenders, for example at mobile internet pioneer Openwave where Rich was a VP of marketing at. A lot of great tech + great people + the era of “closed mobile” = lots of shattered dreams.
